Mandy Harvey is an artist who to this day is deaf, but still is a talented singer. She isn’t just any singer either, she proved herself to be talented and passionate about her work. Harvey is an American pop, jazz, and ukulele using artist. Unfortunately though since she became 18, she faced a profound challenge of facing an illness that caused deafness.
Early Life of the Artist
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio at Jan. 2, 1988, Harvey had struggles with her sense of hearing at a young age. She had to take multiple surgeries as an attempt to fix the problems. When she was younger, she and her family moved to Colorado. From there, she began to advance her skills in the field of music throughout her childhood through her high school which she graduated from in 2006. Since age 4, she’s been getting experience in music which shows her persistence and dedication.
At that same year though, she started to lose her hearing again to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. It is a connective-tissue disorder which caused her hearing loss to the point where she became fully deaf in 2007. This caused her to leave her vocal music education class at Colorado State University, as well as the whole university all together. This was a very devastating event in her life, she gave up in her music career she started since she was four years old. From that fact alone, it can be assumed she is very passionate about her profession.
Harvey quit her pursuit of music in 2007 due to losing her hearing, but she was able to sing correctly again with the help of visual tuners. She had a lot of experience with singing since she was four and was able to retain her talent. At Jay’s Bistro in Colorado, she started to try and perform there when she met jazz pianist Mark Sloniker. She also started performing at Dazzle Jazz Lounge in Denver as later she created three jazz albums. In 2011, she received VSA’s International Young Soloist Award.
One of her recent biggest achievements was in 2017, where Harvey went to audition on season 12 of America’s Got Talent. Simon Cowell gave her the Golden Buzzer for her song that she sang during her performance which was called “Try.” The song was amazing in quality, vocals, and catchy lyrics. The song was about her not living the way she wants to, not being able to have to same condition as everyone else but still trying. Ultimately she was able to win fourth place in the entire season 12 of America’s Got Talent! She has also been involved in the creation of a movie called “The Rebound”.
